Buying Camera Stuff: Filters Exchange

Filters Exchange was founded in early 2008 and started out by carrying Hoya camera filters. Since then it has has made a name for itself in the Philippine photography scene as a specialist in camera filters. The company now offers a dizzying array of filters for photographers who want a special look for their photos. Most people, including myself, know Filters Exchange as an online presence, with a website and a dedicated sub-forum in Pinoy Photography. So when Rolly Magpayo invited me to join him and several other photographers on a visit to Filters Exchange’s shop, I just had to go.

The Really Right Stuff L-plate I got for the Canon 1Ds Mk II does not work with the Arca-Swiss style clamp of my Benro KB-0 Ballhead. This post has instructions on modifying the Benro ballhead to accept the RRS L-plate.

Canon Print-Like-A-Pro Seminar Goes to CDO

Canon Marketing Philippines will be bringing its popular Print-Like-A-Pro seminar to Cagayan De Oro City on the 30th of November 2010. This color management and printing seminar, which will be held at the Mallberry Hotel in Cagayan De Oro City, will be the first of a series of seminars that will held around cities in the Visayas and Mindanao in the coming months. Commercial photographer, noted photography instructor and Canon Brand Ambassador Jo Avila will be the speaker. He is an expert in color managemenr and printing and will be lecturing and demonstrating the workflow necessary to ensure that what you see on your computer screen approximates the one that will be printed.

Stepping Up To The Plate: A Really Right Stuff B57L L-Plate Review

A quick-release plate (or QR plate) is the part of a camera tripod that is directly attached to the bottom of the camera. It allows the camera to be quickly attached to, and removed from, a tripod.The QR plate is simply a piece of metal or plastic screwed into the bottom of the camera and will have rubber or cork-like pads on top to grip the bottom of the camera. Many tripods come with a QR plate of some sort, and only differ in the way that the QR actually attaches to the tripod itself. An L-plate or L-Bracket as it’s also called, is basically two QR plates stuck together in an L-shape. This article reviews a Really Right Stuff B57L L-plate and shows how it’s used.

The Pro Experience: A Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II Review

Professional-grade DSLR camera bodies have a certain mystique to most photographers. They are supposed to chock-full of features, have instant-lock autofocus, a bazillion autofocus points, blazingly-fast shooting speed and virtually indestructible. More than any other kind of DSLR, being seen with a pro body in public gives the impression that one is a professional photographer. Their single-digit model names (for Canon and Nikon, anyway) inspires awe in the wielders of lesser models. There are already several reviews done by photography experts elsewhere on the net: Digital Photography Review, Luminous Landscape, and The-Digital-Picture.com have extensive reviews of the Canon 1Ds Mk II. This post will be about my experience with a pro-level 1Ds Mk II as an amateur who has been using semi-professional level Canon DSLRs for the past three years. So what’s the fuss about pro bodies? Let’s find out!

Recap: Canon PhotoMarathon 2010 - Manila Leg

Canon PhotoMarathon 2010The Manila leg of the Canon PhotoMarathon Philippines 2010 was held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City last Saturday, 6 November 2010. The event is the culmination of the Canon PhotoMarathon for the Philippines, which had its Cebu City and Davao City legs held in the past few weeks.

The PhotoMarathon is a whole-day photography contest open to users of Canon point-and-shoot (P&S), DSLR and video cameras. Participants are given three themes to interpret via photography, and they are allowed to shoot in a given geographical area. Each of them are then allowed to submit one picture per theme, which will be judged by a panel that includes the current Canon Brand Ambassadors. Prizes are awarded for the best pictures as chosen by the judges.

Veteran photographer, photography instructor, and current Canon Brand Ambassador Jo Avila counts some of the Philippines’ biggest companies as his clients for commercial photography, and he has been teaching photography since 1994. He currently offers Basic, Advanced and Food Styling/Food Photography courses. Jo is offering his November 2010 Basic Photography Seminar in 2 different formats: a twice-a-week in the evenings for 5 days starting 9 November 2010, and a special compressed whole-day once-a-week for 2 weeks session starting 14 November 2010.

Two Stops Over With Paco Guerrero: A Photography TV Show

Two Stops Over with Paco Guerrero is a new TV show about photography premiering this coming Sunday, 7th of November, at 7:30PM on the TV station 2nd Avenue.
The show will chronicle travel photographer Paco Guerrero’s return to his homeland, the Philippines, after building a successful career internationally. Paco has spent almost 20 years in countries like the US, Malaysia, London, and has lived in Spain for the last 10 years. Two Stops Over will show Paco’s journey as a photographer and as a Filipino who is rediscovering his country.

Canon PhotoMarathon 2010 – Manila Leg Updates

The Canon PhotoMarathon 2010 – Manila Leg is happening this coming Saturday, 6 November 2010. The event organizers have sent emails to participants who registered online, with instructions to download the waiver form, accomplish it and send it back via email.
